Sky lanterns

I was at the festivals in 2004
You first took my hand with the lantern and candles you bought from a stall
You took me through a distant field
And I’m falling by now
The music and cider, the light of the candles, the sparks
It was a star-filled night

As the sky lantern took flight
Sky lantern took flight
And I gazed into your eyes
As you watched the lantern rise

Later I was on a conference call
On the 30th floor
I watched the horizon outside through the blue tinted glass
I’d moved to the city
You stayed on the southern coast
We drifted apart through the cold winter nights and you’re lost
And across the city night

Sky lanterns took flight
Sky lanterns took flight
And I gazed into your eyes
As you watched the lanterns rise

You can paint outside the lines
You can stay out late and dance away the memories
You can fall in love a dozen times
And still the sky lanterns will rise (again, again, again)

I was in a motorcade
Driving single file
The traffic was stopped and the sirens and whistles rang out
Then I became an astronaught in 2008
I was running repairs on the satellites floating in space
It was a clear dark night

When sky lanterns took flight
Sky lanterns took flight
And I gazed into your eyes
As you watched the lanterns rise
