Dilated pupils

I came to town in the winter months
Where the pace of life took me by surprise
And I’ve never been the sort to paint the high streets red
But for goodness’ sake
It’s going to take a miracle and then
You came to town on a rollerblade
With a single suitcase and dilated pupils
We knew that you’d be trouble from your make-up choices,
Those metallic colours and elongating eyeliner
With striking shades , dramatic eyes
Whispers start in the checkout lines
As they cling for dear life to their loyalty cards
But I just want to see you, but don’t want to look in your eyes

Where dilated pupils will give me away
When there’s certain things you’d much prefer to keep to yourself
This reflex reaction removes any choice

I kept my counsel ‘til spring arrived
Kept a discreet distance with the best intentions
With everybody’s talking becomes static noise
All the jealous boys with fabricated stories
And the office girls in matching clothes
The bus conductors and nightclub queues
Well I guess I’ve found something they can’t recognise
And I just want to see you,  but don’t want to look in your eyes

Where dilated pupils will give me away
When there’s certain things you’d much prefer to keep to yourself
This reflex reaction removes any choice

Dilated pupils will give me away
When there comes a point to share the things you keep to yourself
This reflex reaction removes any choice
